Commitment to Fostering Diversity
We have a multi-year goal to better reflect the communities in which we work and foster a more inclusive work environment. We have developed a 3-year roadmap that builds upon our culture of commitment to our people and our purpose, We Build To Improve Lives, and guides us down a path towards accomplishing this goal.
We believe we build at our best when we draw upon a diversity of experiences and backgrounds
XL’s DEI Vision
At XL, we build to improve lives. Our values of We Not Me, Be True, and Go Beyond are inherently aligned with the principles of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Inclusion
To us, inclusion means creating a culture that is fair, values and respects all employees and partners, welcomes all voices, ensures that everyone feels like they belong at XL, and empowers all employees and partners to contribute their best.
Diversity
To promote diversity, we proactively incorporate a wide range of backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences that reflect company values in the field, offices and the needs of clients we serve, and support the community in which we work.
DEI Programs
XL is committed to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion in which all employees contribute creative ideas, seek challenges, and have the opportunity to grow.
Promoting Supplier Diversity
We maintain a database of over 2,500 subcontractors, nearly 400 of which are UBEs, and continually generate additional interest with local vendors through outreach events, training programs, and clinics on construction and business management. We have a goal to target a 25% solicitation rate on all projects.
Driving Social Justice and Equity
XL was the first general contractor to earn and publish a JUST label. The JUST label is a third-party certification issued by the International Living Futures Institute that provides organizations with the framework for effectively reporting equity and transparency within their company.
Accountability For Progress
In 2023, we published our first ESG Report, establishing a baseline in 2022 for tracking Environmental, Social and Governance metrics (including DEI). XL’s progress, results and commitment to improvement goals will be reported annually.
Supporting and Developing People
We have invested in a major multi-year Leadership Development Program that provides a clear path for career development and success. DEI is a central component of training, development, and promotion opportunities.
Building Understanding and Best Practices
We believe that creating real DEI impact begins with establishing a common understanding and language for everyone to discuss and address DEI challenges and opportunities.
- We have invested in ensuring all employees receive foundational DEI training on critical topics, such as unconscious bias and inclusion, and additional inclusive management training is provided for leaders.
- We are an active participant in Construction Inclusion Week, a national week-long program to provide daily stand-downs on a range of DEI topics and cultivate open field and workplace conversations.
- From expansive recruitment of entry-level talent to apprenticeships for journey-level workers, we are committed to providing opportunities, training and development, and easing barriers to entry in the construction industry.
