XL Construction built a new 71,000 s.f., two-story charter school, funded by Oracle. Situated on Oracle’s Redwood City Campus, Design Tech High School (d.tech) curves with the natural shoreline of the Belmont Slough. XL managed numerous rain and environmental challenges without compromising the 14-month timeline established in preconstruction. The building team unexpectedly encountered two endangered species in the area, requiring protection measures. Workers also managed to install a deep foundation system in extremely wet conditions during an intense rainy season. But the finished product was worth the effort. Inside, d.tech spaces hold classic shop equipment and digital creation tools. XL also created chemistry and biology labs, multi-use classrooms and a two-story lobby. XL used CM at-Risk delivery method, ensuring budget control for Oracle on this project which earned LEED-NC Gold and numerous awards.
